Eternity – Exhibition – Li Yuping
Peter Scott Gallery
8-12th September 2016
Lancaster University
LA1 4YW
This exhibition is part of a practice-based Ph. D. study that investigates the genre of landscape painting through a cross-cultural perspective and method of practice. Through fusing the theories and methodologies of traditional Chinese art and contemporary art practice, Yuping’s landscape painting explores spatial display, time passing, and the various relations of self and environment. The works displayed in the show aim to bring new forms and new methods of cross-cultural art, linking the artistic fields of ancient China and contemporary West.
The term ‘Eternity’ was initially used by Michael Sullivan (1979) to describe the traditional Chinese landscape painting, which often demonstrates an eternal space-time state as well as a higher spiritual level of natural harmony. This exhibition borrows Sullivan’s term as its title to imply the original spirit of Chinese landscape is about to fused into contemporary visual art.
Li Yuping was born in Beijing, China. She received her BA degree at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and later studied at the Edinburgh College of Art for an MFA. She is currently submitting her PhD in Art with The Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Arts (LICA), Lancaster University. Her paintings are currently collected by China Central Academy, Singapore Art Seasons Gallery, Edinburgh Corn Exchange Gallery and Bath & West of England Society.
